Persons needing in-depth help may be referred to a staff member who can assist the individual outline a strategy to achieve his or her goals. CP of New Jersey staff members will remain involved as long as necessary to achieve those goals. Our staff can inform individuals about their basic legal rights, both educational and civil. We can also help families through due process procedures. In all areas, Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey staff members encourage and teach self-advocacy skills.
Our staff helps familiarize individuals and families with the programs
and services that are available, including housing, funding sources,
recreation, employment, social security, community integration,
assistive technology, transportation, personal assistance services,
respite services and education. We can offer assistance completing
the initial application for the services and we can help in appealing
decisions, as well as assist in strengthening a case by getting
evaluations to prove a need for service.
Our staff members also work with individuals and/or families who are receiving services from the state ( DDD, the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, etc.) or from other agencies. We advocate on behalf of those who may feel they are not receiving appropriate services from other agencies.
System Change/Legislative Advocacy:
Our staff tracks and provides information on federal and state legislation that affects the lives of people with disabilities. We work with various coalitions to bring about positive change in New Jersey's system. Our staff proudly collaborates with the NJ Community Providers Association, Association for People in Supported Employment, Developmental Disabilities Council - Education Committee, State Independent Living Council and many others.
Our Consumer Advocacy Services staff regularly communicates with other local and statewide disability organizations and officials. Together, we respond with a unified voice when system change is needed or issues are raised. We've been vocal about the revisions to the New Jersey Special Education Code and currently, Cerebral Palsy of New Jersey is involved in the Coalition for Special Education Funding Reform.
Self-Advocacy Groups: Our staff is actively involved in promoting the existence and effectiveness of self-advocacy groups throughout the state. We have facilitated groups in several counties and would welcome the opportunity to work with any person or organization needing training and/or technical assistance in starting or maintaining a self-advocacy group.
